“The first thing my daughter said was that she didn’t even want her phone back. She was so happy to be without it for the week and just spend time outdoors with camp friends.”
– Parent of a MN Summer Camper
At Camp Odayin, we’re big believers in the power of being unplugged. What does it mean to be unplugged? At camp, we require all campers to leave their devices at home – no exceptions. We want our campers to trade their screens for sunshine and their notifications for real-life conversations. By stepping away from phones and smartwatches, kids can be 100% present. It’s about creating a space where the most important connections are the one made across a campfire, not over Wi-Fi.
This isn’t just a camp tradition; it’s about protecting the way kids grow. At Odayin, our staff recently read The Anxious Generation, by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. In the book, Haidt asserts that personal devices have become “experience blockers.” They take up the time and attention kids need for real-world play, which is how they learn to navigate the world and build true resilience. By hitting the “pause” button on the digital world, we’re not just taking away a phone; we’re opening up space for the hands-on experiences and face-to-face friendships that help children thrive.
Our volunteers at camp lead by example, too. Our counselors and nurses keep their devices turned off and tucked away so their focus remains entirely on our campers.
Parents – we are so grateful that you are willing to send your child to a device-free zone. We know that this may be hard for you as well! All of a sudden, your child is not a text or phone call away. Your trust in Odayin to take care of your child is not taken lightly. Your communication with staff (rather than directly with your child) helps your child build independence and confidence.
Swapping out screens for real-time connections is what camp is all about. To get ready for a camp, we encourage families to practice device-free time. Together, let’s grow the resilence of these amazing heart heroes!
