Staff Training Requirements
There will be two aspects of staff training. In addition to our in-person training, the following training materials will be emailed to you 2-3 weeks prior to camp.
1. Pre-Camp Training Videos (counselors & nurses). When you click the assignment link, you will be prompted to sign in. You will need to sign up for an EdPuzzle account, if you haven’t already. This is required to view the pre-training videos. Please fill out all the information when creating an account, especially your LAST NAME. Then click Join Class.
During some of the training videos, it will pause several times to recap and ask you questions. You will not be able to skip or fast forward through the video to answer these questions, however, they can be paused at any time to complete at a later date. If you do not pass a quiz, you will get a notification in EdPuzzle to retry (we love second chances!). We suggest setting aside 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete these training videos. Note: There are two videos that are optional, but highly recommended for new staff.

In-Person Staff Training
Chippewa: Sunday, July 13 – 11am-5pm
Namekagon: Sunday, July 20 – 11am-5pm
Flambeau: Sunday, July 27 – 11am-5pm
ALL counselors and nurses are required to attend staff training the day prior to their camp session(s). Lunch and a good time will be provided. This in-person staff training will be located at the Camp Odayin office headquarters (3503 High Point Drive North, Oakdale, MN 55128 – 4Front Office & Technology Campus). We will meet in Building 4, which is the largest building with the main entrance to the campus. (Building #4 has 4 stories, building #3 has 3 stories, etc.) Come ready to meet, greet and have fun!
Camp Transportation
On the first morning of camp, staff must arrive at the Camp Odayin office headquarters in Oakdale by 8:00am to be present for camper camper check-in. We have air-conditioned coach buses reserved to take us to camp, and all staff members are required to ride the bus. We will be leaving directly following camper check-in. You can leave your car parked in the parking lot for the week. We will return to the Camp Odayin office on the last day of camp between 6:00 and 6:30pm. There will be a staff celebration nearby in Oakdale after all of the campers have been picked up.
Travel Scholarship
Thanks to a generous donor, we are able to offer travel support for staff and campers would benefit from up to a $200 reimbursement for your travel costs (hotel, flight, gas, etc). These funds can be used for travel/accommodations related to attending staff training and camp. Contact the Camp Odayin office at brooke@campodayin.org for pre-approval and more information.
Our Campers
We will be serving campers from all over the United States. All of our campers have a history of heart disease and have been cleared by their cardiologist to attend camp. We adapt the camp experience so that everyone may participate regardless of the severity of their condition, at their own comfort level. However, there will be some campers who require some extra attention or assistance. Nurses assigned to each cabin will inform counselors of additional needs, distribute medications, and monitor the medical conditions of each camper. At staff training, you will be given specific information and instructions regarding the health and safety of each camper in your cabin group.
Cabin Groups
At Summer Camp, campers are divided into cabins with 6-8 campers with 2 counselors and a nurse. In addition, our host site, Camp Knutson, has an awesome seasonal staff and one of the K staff will help support your cabin group as needed. Directors Brooke Hohag and Morgan Freeburg will be present at all camp sessions, along with a lead nurses and three cardiologists to ensure that staff and campers are medically supported.
Medical Details
In order to comply with our American Camp Association accreditation, we ask for details related to your health history on the acceptance form. This medical information is confidential, very important in case of an emergency, and not retained year to year for returning staff.
All staff medication must be turned into the Lead Nurse at camper registration on the first day. Our policy is that all camper and staff medications are to be stored and locked in the Health Center and cannot be kept in the cabins. This includes vitamins, supplements, and over the counter medicine such as Advil, Sudafed, etc. When you need your medicine, you may retrieve it from the Health Center at any time.
Cell Phones & Mail
You may certainly bring your cell phone to camp, but we maintain a strict policy regarding usage that is covered at staff training. Campers are not permitted to have phones or smart devices (like a watch), unless used to monitor their hearts. We maintain this same standard for staff. We encourage you to prepare to have a “non smart” watch to wear at camp. More details in the pre-training videos, as well. If you have questions or concerns, please email us to discuss. New this year: Cell phones CAN be used as alarm clocks.
If your family needs to reach you during Summer Camp, they can call the Directors on the Camp Odayin cell phone at 651.491.8673.
If anyone wants to send you a letter while you’re at camp, here’s the address (no packages, please):
